Wifi Security Types
WiFi is something we all use a lot. Most of us have no idea about the security and encryption of WiFi.
Many of us are using our phone or laptop with wifi.
Different security types and protocols are used for our WiFi security.
When we turn on the WiFi hotspot on our phone, it will say WPA2 or NONE.
In it, we will select the WPA2. Why??...
In this section, we will look at each of the types of WiFi
security.
Wifi security Types.
- WEP( WIRED EQUIVALENT PRIVACY )
- WPA(WIFI-PROTECTED ACCESS)
- WPA2(WIFI-PROTECTED ACCESS 2)
- WPA3(WIFI-PROTECTED ACCESS 3)
- WPS(WIFI PROTECTED SETUP)
Let's look at it from WEP first.
WEP(WIRED EQUIVALENT PRIVACY )
First developed in 1999. The first wireless security protocols. Another
name for this implies.
It uses 40-bit encryption.
Then it is not in use now because it is not so secure and can be easily hacked by hackers. So WiFi needed a more secure wireless protocol.WPA is designed for that.
WPA(WIFI-PROTECTED ACCESS)
This is another wireless security protocol created to fix all the problems
in the whole WEP.
WPA was slightly better than WEP.
This is because the encryption method was a bit strong. It uses the encryption method called TKIP. TKIP( TEMPORAL KEY INTEGRITY PROTOCOL).
Although it was stronger than WEP, it also had some vulnerabilities and such as lack of security. So even this is also not practical now.
WPA 2 was introduced to solve the problems in these two protocols mentioned
above.
WPA2(WIFI-PROTECTED ACCESS)
It was created to provide stronger security than WPA. It uses an ENCRYPTION system called AES for security. Aes (advanced
encryption standard).
In AES, the symmetric encryption algorithm is used. This algorithm is
mainly used to protect against brute force attack.
Currently, the most important government data is encrypted by these AES.
WPA3(WIFI-PROTECTED ACCESS 3)
This WPA 3 is the next generation of all security protocols. It was released in 2018. WiFi Introduced the first cutting edge production protocols method to the market. Brought new features for simplicity and WiFi security.
Not only that but it also provided robust authentication. Also increased production when the password is entered incorrectly.
WPS(WI-FI PROTECTED SET-UP)
Today's WiFi routers and printers have a push button. The work is done by
placing the printer near the router and pressing the push button on
both.
This button will be very helpful to make the work easier. It also has a pin number facility with this function you can strengthen
your security.
Modern routers do not have WEP but support both WPA-WPA2. So it has security protocols like TKIP and AES. When we use this, WPA connects on the old device and wpa2 connects on the new device. But it has a drawback and the TKIP is slightly weaker than the AES. Currently, it is not widely used.
Instead of using this, many people use WPA2 - PSK (AES).
Access Control
We need to look at another method which is called Access Control. In some
routers, it is called a mac filter.
With these options, you can allow or block a device.
All network adapters also have a mac address. This is a hexadecimal number.
Each device has its own unique number. access control gives you an extra layer of security. the wired device also has this feature.
WiFi security types play an important role in information
technology.
